May has been a haul-filled month. A culmination of revision procrastination and my new found beauty obsession has led to my collections
doubling and my bank balance depleting. As this is all fairly new to me, this
month includes a lot of the cult classics. I’m still finding my way, and
although I’m late to the party these are the ones I couldn’t have gone without
this month.
I’ve never been big on skincare. For years a swift scrub
with a cleansing wipe suited me fine and anything more seemed a bit excessive.
It’s only been recently that I’ve started to take note of my skins needs and I
decided if I was investing in good makeup, I needed a flawless skin base to
accompany it. I’m still sceptical on skincare claims so I pattered slowly
into the skincare arena and after reading many reviews I decided to start
initially with a mid-price cleansing oil. The texture of this has a beautiful
slip to it, which surprisingly doesn’t feel greasy. I find it takes of makeup
well, even budging my most waterproof mascara. A little goes a long way too and
it smooths onto the skin like a dream, emulsifying slightly with a splash of
water. A lot of the reviews I read before purchasing seemed to note that the
scent was it’s down side, but personally I love it. It’s quite fruity, alsmot
orange-y and just leaves me feeling so fresh.
For as long as I can remember, Miss Dior has been my signature scent. With the weather warming (slightly) I decided I needed something a little lighter, a tad fresher and just a little more grown-up. After spending hours wafting samples round my nose in the store, I was surprised that I kept coming back to this one. It’s a far cry from my usual floral notes and I usually stay well clear of anything cucumber related. It’s so distinctive, quite cooling and oddly nostalgic. The cucumber doesn’t stand out too much, but It’s a great blend and really perfect for a summers day.
I’ve never been a lover of high-end mascaras, as I find that they are almost always on par with the drugstore alternatives, but after reading so many rave reviews on this I couldn’t resist. The packing is to die for, and it really stands out in my collection. The curved brush manages to coat every lash, without sticking them together. It holds a curl wonderfully, thickens, lengthens and I’ve experienced no flaking or smudging. I’m on the bandwagon, and if you’re lucky enough to get hold of this, I really can’t recommend this enough.
Having quite an unstructured and round head, contouring is a must for me. Whilst I usually use a bronzer, I was looking to invest in something that looked a little less warm-toned for every day use. I shopped around for a while, trying to resist spending so much on such a tiny product, (this doesn’t come cheap) but I eventually gave in. And this delivers. It’s a beautiful subtle powder, that looks almost grey in the pan but goes on as a wonderfully shadowed ash-taupe. It smooths on quite sheer and natural, but can be built up for a more dramatic effect. Despite the compact, minute size of this I feel like this will last a while, which softens the price-tag blow (or so I keep telling myself..)
Without sounding like I’m repeating every other beauty blog,
here’s another cult favourite. Having been blessed with my Dad’s long, straight
eyelashes a curler has always been an essential, however I’ve always relied on
basic drugstore ones. This was a bit of a rash purchase, something that I threw
in my basket without even realising I’d done so. Honestly, I can’t remember
what I did without them. A quick squeeze seems to lengthen and lift my
eyelashes like never before. The holding power is second to none, even when
I’ve removed all my make-up at the end of the day my lashes look noticeably
curled and fluttery.
So that’s all for my May favourites. I feel like I’ve built
up a good base of classics and essentials this month, so I’m excited to venture
out into more adventurous lines very soon.
